The Capacitor

The capacitor (or older condenser) is one of the electrical passive components. They can store electrical energy in an electric field. This field is generated between two conducting plates that are positioned at a very close distance from each other. They are separated by a so called dielectric, which is made from an insulating material. There are many different constructions and variations of capacitors. They are used for example to block direct current while allowing alternating current.
The main parameter for the capacitor is the capacitance, which is expressed in Farads. Capacitance is related to the surface of the two facing plates, and also to the distance between the plates. The larger this distance, the smaller the capacitance. The larger the surface of the plates, the larger the capacitance. The capacitance is also dependent on the material choice of both the plates and the dielectric. Capacitors have mostly a fixed value, but can also be variable. This can be done for example by adjusting the two plates to have a larger or smaller facing surface.
